MHL 357 - History of African American Music (3)This course will explore the musical innovations and contributions of people of African descent to music in the United States. The course will begin by examining the variety of musics brought to the Americas with the slave-trade and explore how the music of a resilient people germinated with European musical traditions to help create diverse genres such as Minstrelsy, Spirituals, the Blues, Jazz, Gospel, Bluegrass, Country and Western, Rock and Roll, Hip Hop, and R&B, as well as making significant, though often overlooked, contributions to instrumental and choral art music.
Prerequisite(s): None Grading Method: Letter Grade Term Typically Offered: Every other Spring
