This course surveys the social, cultural, and political history of the United States to the mid-nineteenth century. Topics include indigenous American, European, and African encounters; regional development and divergence; imperial conflict and revolution; constitutional development; democratization and its implications; religious impulses and reformism; immigration and nativism; land and westward expansion; slavery and sectional division; and the Civil War.
