Course Numbers Guidelines


090-099   Preparatory remedial classes - will not count towards undergraduate degree totals.

100-199   Introductory undergraduate - generally freshmen and sophomore level. (0-59 credits earned)

200-299   Intermediate undergraduate - generally freshmen and sophomore level. (0-59 credits earned)

300-399   Advanced undergraduate - generally sophomores and juniors. (30-89 credits earned)

400-499   Advanced upper undergraduate - generally juniors and seniors. (60 or more credits earned)

500-799   Graduate level. [Some 500 level courses may be available to qualified undergraduate seniors by department permission.]

    999      Denotes registration placeholder or participation in special programs.

 

COMMON COURSE NUMBERS WHICH MAY BE USED ACROSS UNDERGRADUATE PREFIXES

___193 Seminar Course (1-6) Freshman level, non-regular course offered occasionally which covers topics selected by the department.

___235 Practicum (1-3) Non-capstone, practical student work under the supervision of a faculty member or a professional in the student’s field.

___265 Honors Foundations Course (3) Non-regular course offered as Foundations option for Honors Program participants.

___293 Seminar Course (1-6) Sophomore level, non-regular course offered occasionally which covers topics selected by the department. 

___391/491 Independent Study (0.5-6) Individualized study of a topic of interest beyond the content of regular course offerings, involving a minimum of 1 - 3 meetings with instructor during semester. Available to juniors or above (juniors take 391; seniors take 491). Contract required.

___392/492 Directed Study (0.5-6) a faculty-directed study on a topic of interest beyond the content of regular course offerings. Requires a minimum of 50 minutes per week with instructor during the semester. Available to juniors or above (juniors take 392; seniors take 492). Contract required.

___393 Seminar Course (1-6) Junior level or above, non-regular course offered occasionally which covers topics selected by the department. 

___435 Internship (0.5-9) Course and grade based on time spent in practical experience; required in several major and minor programs. Contract required.

___465 Honors Research / Project Course (1) Individualized final research / Project / Creative Product for Honors Program participants. Contract required.
