BIO 120 - Sustainable Biology (4)Introductory course on sustainable biology with emphasis in small-scale agriculture with application to agricultural missions work. Lecture topics include: what is sustainability and how is it acheived?; plants and people (ethnobotany), principles of plant structure and function, soil ecology, health and management; conventional tillage vs. no-till cultivation, plant propagation, varieties, and cultivars; greenhouses and high tunnels, composting, pest management, and sustainable regenerative agriculture. Field lab will focus on process of establishing, managing, and harvesting a vegetable/herb garden in a sustainable and stewardship-focused context. Knowledge and skills applicable to food production used to develop and foster relationships in the context of local community and mission work will be emphasized.
