ENG 374 - Studies in Medieval and Renaissance Literature (3)

This course examines topics in English literature from the Middle Ages to the Renaissance (1400-1700).  It conducts readings of texts in various genres–verse, drama, and prose-in their specific cultural and historical contexts. Readings may include the Gawain-poet, medieval women writers, medieval devotional texts, and Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales. The course also studies the disruptions and continuities in the transition from the medieval to the early modern period, with the primary aim to explore the explosion of literary and poetic productivity in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries in England and its justification as an essential activity. Readings include Spenser, Sidney, Lady Mary Wroth, Donne, Herbert, Mary Herbert Sidney, and Jonson.
