PS 205 - Markets & Politics (3)

A survey of political economy, this course explores the two fundamental and opposing principles for organizing societies and economies: markets and politics. It begins with reading selections from the two most famous advocates for these positions, namely Adam Smith and Karl Marx, but also includes a historical and theological section on development of the concept of the market. The latter part of the course covers more recent work on the uses of politics and markets by scholars such as John Kenneth Galbraith and Charles Lindblom, as well as the collapse of command-and-control economic systems and the “triumph” of markets.
