COM 130 - Public Speaking & Media Influence in Culture (3)

Students develop their public speaking and critical thinking skills by examining how mass oratory and media impact culture. Students will hone their public speaking skills by preparing, adapting, delivering, and evaluating oral presentations. The course analyzes contemporary messages and systems of meaning in traditional and digital forms of popular media. Emphasis on recognizing media’s impact on cultural formation, and the development of the critical tools necessary to recognize and engage worldviews embedded in media and messages. Students move beyond being passive consumers of media to being active, thoughtful, and ethical communicators in today’s participatory media culture.
