BIO 227 - Aquatic & Wetland Biology (3)Provides an overview of the biology and ecology of aquatic systems with an emphasis on the diversity and taxonomy of organisms residing in these habitats. The processes dictating the characteristics of freshwater ecosystems (energy flow, nutrient flow, movement of water) are examined as well as the impact of anthropogenic perturbations on these processes. Additional topics discussed in the course include constructed wetlands, aquatic toxicology, infectious aquatic microorganisms and their control, trophic states, and extreme aquatic environments. Students exit the course with a strong foundation in the many facets of aquatic biology and familiarity with aquatic flora and fauna.
